History of a Great Nation2 min read

The UAE National Day is fast approaching. This year, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, wrote a poem describing 2022 the Year of Distinction and Precedence. Sheikh Mohammed writes in the poem about looking forward to the UAE’s next 50 years with “determination, creativity, and skill.” He stated that the UAE will continue to contribute to education, production, trade, culture, and that the country is on a path that is united by strength.

Looking back at how this great nation became what it is today

On December 2, 1971, six emirates declared their independence from Britain and established the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Al Fujairah, Sharjah, and Umm Al Quwain were the six emirates that agreed to join the union. Ras Al Khaimah initially declined, but eventually joined the federation in February 1972.

The union’s first president was Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi, the richest of the seven emirates, who was followed by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed of Dubai, the second-richest emirate. The union signed a friendship treaty with Britain and declared itself a member of the Arab Nation.

UAE Flag

From top to bottom, the flag has three equal horizontal bands of green, white, and black, with a vertical strip of red next to the mast. The four colors are intended to represent Arabian unity and were inspired by an Arabic poem written by Safiul Din Al Holi. The poet wrote about the hard-fought historical battles of the land, with benign deeds and intentions (white), but the enthusiasm of the battles was strong (black), while the lands were vast and green, and the gallant swords were stained with red blood.

This great nation has emerged in recent years, setting a high standard of excellence, and becoming well-known on a global scale. When people think of Dubai, they think of the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, underwater villas, the Burj Al Arab, EXPO 2020, Museum of the Future to mention a few. Technology has been adapted while keeping the environment in mind, resulting in the construction of modern yet environmentally friendly homes across the UAE.

History has shaped the United Arab Emirates into what it is today. There may have been some intervening factors, but this great nation was strong enough to win. In transportation, education, and daily life, the country embraced modern technology. There have been many changes, but one thing remains constant: the welfare of both UAE nationals and expats is always considered. From the assurance of safety to the ease of transportation, education, and modern and technologically designed homes, this country will always be the second home of millions.
